Spa etiquette for your first visit

A first spa visit can feel a little mysterious. What do you wear? Are you supposed to chat? Do you tip? None of it is complicated, and nobody expects you to know already. Here is what our front desk tells every new guest.

Arrive early, and leave the rush outside

Come 15 minutes before your treatment, or 30 before a ritual. You will check in, change into a robe and have time for the steam room and a cup of tea. Arriving relaxed makes a real difference to how the treatment feels.

Undress to your comfort level

For a massage or body treatment, most guests undress fully or keep their underwear on. You are always covered with a sheet, and your therapist only uncovers the area they are working on. For a facial, you only need to remove your top.

Speak up, or say nothing at all

Your therapist will follow your lead. Chat if you like, or close your eyes and drift off; both are completely normal. Do speak up about pressure, temperature, music or anything that feels uncomfortable. You will never offend us.

A few courtesies

  • Put your phone on silent and keep calls to the entrance.
  • Keep voices low in the steam room and the lounge.
  • Skip heavy perfume, and avoid alcohol before your treatment.
  • Tell us about pregnancy, injuries or allergies when you book.

And the tip?

Gratuity is never required, but 18 to 20 percent of the treatment price is customary in the US. You can add it at the front desk by card or cash, and it goes to your therapist in full.
